A Sad Letter: Bull Riding at JPJ is a Disgrace
It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter, as a once beloved pastime has turned into something that many of us can no longer support. Bull riding at John Paul Jones Arena (JPJ), a venue known for hosting family-friendly events, concerts, and sports, has become a disgraceful spectacle that reflects poorly on both the arena and the sport itself. What was once thrilling has now become a tragic display of cruelty masked as entertainment, and it’s time to address the issues that plague this so-called sport.
A Problem of Animal Cruelty
At its core, the most distressing aspect of bull riding is the treatment of the animals. The bulls used in these events are often subjected to conditions that would outrage any compassionate person. They are bred for aggression, kept in confined spaces, and agitated intentionally to provoke violent behavior during the ride. Electric prods, tight flank straps, and spurs are used to force the bulls into a state of fear and anger, all for the sake of an eight-second spectacle. This is not sport—it is exploitation.
JPJ, as a venue that prides itself on being a pillar of the community, should not be hosting events that celebrate the abuse of animals. In a world where the ethics of animal treatment are increasingly scrutinized, it is disheartening to see an otherwise respectable arena tarnished by such inhumane practices. The bulls do not willingly participate, and the conditions they are subjected to are far from natural. Their suffering is real, and it is appalling that this is overlooked in favor of cheap thrills and profit.
A Dangerous and Reckless Sport

It is reckless and irresponsible, especially when there are so many other forms of family-friendly entertainment that do not carry these inherent risks or ethical concerns.
Time for Change
Bull riding at JPJ is a disgrace, not just because of what it does to the bulls, but because of what it represents. It glorifies the mistreatment of animals and celebrates human risk in a way that is no longer acceptable in modern society. John Paul Jones Arena, with its history of providing high-quality entertainment, is better than this. It’s time to reconsider the type of events we support and the values we promote to our community.
We must ask ourselves: are we willing to sacrifice compassion and safety for a few fleeting moments of thrill? If the answer is no, then it is time for JPJ to end its association with bull riding and move toward events that align with values of respect, kindness, and humanity.
