One of the best players of all time has to retired. Rafael Nadal will compete in his final tennis tournament in November, retiring as one of the most accomplished players in history.
He will do so in his native nation at the Davis Cup Finals, the world’s largest team competition, commonly known as the World Cup of tennis. The knockouts are taking place in Málaga, Spain, making for the ideal homecoming.
“The reality is it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations,” Nadal said in a video posted to social media.
“It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make, but in this life, everything has a beginning and an end, and I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.”
Nadal will retire with 22 Grand Slam titles, 14 coming in the French Open, an Olympic gold medal and 209 weeks as ATP No. 1.
He’s not done yet, though. In November, he’ll compete for Spain in search of his country’s seventh world championship, all on home court.
