The Dallas Cowboys received sad news on Monday. Their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss “multiple” weeks.
Prescott was injured during a 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The injury most likely occurred when Prescott fired a ball to Jalen Brooks late in the third quarter.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Prescott will seek a second evaluation on his injury in the hopes of receiving better news. However, it is most likely that he will be out for at least a few weeks, if not more.
Prescott’s injury comes at the worst possible moment for the Cowboys. After entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations, they find themselves in danger of missing the playoffs altogether. The team is currently 3-5 after a three-game losing streak and sits third in the NFC East behind the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) and leading Washington Commanders (7-2).
With Prescott out, the Cowboys will likely turn to backup Cooper Rush, who went 4-1 in five starts in 2022. They also have former third-overall pick Trey Lance on their roster.
Prescott signed a record four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Cowboys in the summer, following one of his best seasons as a pro in 2023. However, his performance has not been up to the level of the NFL’s highest-paid player. Prescott is completing 64.7% of his throws, which is the second-lowest record of his career, and has passed for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
