Tennessee’s future defensive line took a significant step forward with the commitment of class of 2025 high-three-star defensive tackle Darrion Smith from Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Smith made his decision official on Tuesday evening, solidifying the Vols’ efforts to strengthen their interior defensive front. the relationship between the two parties has continued to grow. Smith has visited Knoxville multiple times, further solidifying his connection to the program.
The most recent trip took place during Tennessee’s “Big Orange Kickoff” event this past weekend, where Smith returned to campus. While he has not yet taken an official visit, this late-July trip was pivotal in his decision-making process. Smith expressed a deep comfort with Tennessee’s coaching staff, led by head coach Josh Heupel, defensive coordinator Tim Banks, and defensive line coach Rodney Garner. Smith also connected with defensive graduate assistant Robert Ayers Jr., noting how he feels like part of a family with the coaching staff and the overall culture at Tennessee.
“I just like the coaches,” Smith shared with Rivals about his decision. “They’re family-oriented. I like the culture up there and they’re building something.” This family-like environment and the promise of Tennessee’s future development were key factors in Smith’s choice. As the Vols continue to recruit top talent for their defensive line, Smith’s commitment is seen as a major building block for their defensive depth and future success in the SEC.
