Former Celtic striker turned commentator Chris Sutton believes Hoops winger Nicolas Kuhn should stay in Glasgow despite potential transfer interest in the January window.
It follows the 24-year-old’s spectacular start to the season, in which he has scored 10 goals and assisted 11 in 17 games across all competitions.
Kuhn’s performances, notably in the UEFA Champions League, have sparked widespread interest.
Indeed, English Premier League duo Brentford and Fulham both ‘inquired‘ about the attacker after his brace and man-of-the-match display against RB Leipzig a week and a half ago.
Sutton, though, thinks the Hoops should hold on to their star man in January despite how tempting a big money offer may be: “What is inconceivable is Celtic allowing him [Kuhn] to go at that stage [January],” wrote the outspoken pundit in his latest RecordSport column.
“Listen, I understand money talks, and if a head-spinning £30m offer comes in, then it will give food for thought. But Celtic are in a strong position and under no pressure to sell. Money is already pouring in from all angles.
“They will be in no hurry [to sell] – and neither should Kuhn be [to leave].”
If he continues to produce at his current level, Kuhn will join a long list of talented Celtic exports.
Just a few months ago, Matt O’Riley left the Scottish Premiership champions for a price that might reach £30 million with add-ons. Kieran Tierney, Odsonne Edouard, and Jota have also contributed significantly to the club’s revenues in the past.
While the former Bayern Munich, Ajax, and Leipzig academy star is expected to earn a large fee for Celtic in the future, Sutton believes January is too soon for Kuhn to go.
He said: “I can’t say I know him personally, but he seems to have a smart head on his shoulders. He’s at a big club, he’s playing in the Champions League, and he’s in the form of his life.
“Why risk that at this point? Kuhn will know there will be a time when Celtic will cash in and agree to let him go.
“He only needs to look at the Matt O’Riley situation.
“It’s still early days, but Kuhn already looks destined to become the next record-breaking transfer fee, and while I’d be stunned if he left in January, I wouldn’t be shocked if he does eventually go for even more than O’Riley, Jota and Kieran Tierney’s £25m fees. Big money is on the way for the German – but just not yet.”
Sutton’s advice to Kuhn is simple: stay grounded and with Celtic after January, keep performing, and the club will eventually give you the opportunity to advance to the next level.
