The Boston Red Sox are emerging as a top contender for Atlanta Braves’ ace Max Fried, who could be a key target for the team in their efforts to bolster their starting pitching rotation this offseason. The Red Sox struggled with their pitching in the second half of 2024, and while their lineup was competitive, their rotation faltered, leaving them in desperate need of reinforcements. Fried, a $160 million star, is seen as a major upgrade for Boston, which has the financial flexibility and motivation to make a move.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently ranked the Red Sox as the second-most likely landing spot for Fried, although it is widely believed that they could very well be the frontrunner. The Red Sox are under pressure to improve their rotation after a disappointing finish to the season, and adding Fried, one of the top left-handed pitchers in the league, would be a significant step forward. Not only does Fried provide a reliable arm at the top of the rotation, but his presence could elevate the entire pitching staff.
The Red Sox are in a position to make a competitive offer, especially considering their financial capacity. Moreover, Boston can pitch the idea of a potential World Series run with Fried anchoring the rotation. Another key selling point is Fried’s relationship with Red Sox pitchers Lucas Giolito and Jack Flaherty, both of whom were high school teammates with Fried. If the Red Sox can land Fried, there’s also a possibility they could secure Flaherty, making it a reunion of sorts for the trio.
With their need for pitching and the financial resources to make it happen, the Red Sox are well-positioned to pursue Fried aggressively this winter.
