Donald Trump’s transition staff apparently failed to sign ethics agreements, allowing the organization to operate on “secret money,” causing uproar among the president-elect’s detractors.
Trump has been quick to announce his Cabinet nominations over the last two weeks, but he has been slow to reveal the “names of the donors who are funding his transition effort,” according to a Sunday New York Times report. This is part of Trump’s failure to adhere to ethics norms, which has also reportedly led to his team being left in the dark on key issues.
The news sparked uproar on social media.
Republicans opposed to Trump flagged the news on X, which was previously named Twitter before Elon Musk’s purchase of the site, saying, “Trump has yet to sign the ethics agreement required for the presidential transition, allowing him to raise unlimited amounts of money from unknown donors to pay for the staff, travel, and office space involved in preparing to take over the government.”
“The most corrupt president in American history,” the group added.
Former White House correspondent Brian J. Karem repeated that claim, calling Trump the “MOST corrupt POTUS in history.”
Political science scholar Tim Hogan called the development “more evidence that John Roberts and his fascist SCOTUS majority likely destroyed America and started the beginning of the end of our fragile Democracy.”
Musician Elizabeth Logan said of the so-called “secret money,” “Only in America can a person steal this much money and not have to submit to an IRS audit.”
Artist Art Candee said Trump “has been dragging his feet on signing the standard ethics and transparency agreements with the federal government.”
“Is anyone…anyone at all…surprised?” the artist asked Sunday.
