Rachel Homan Wins National Title, Improves to 40-2 on Season
In a thrilling women’s final at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Kioti National, Canada’s Rachel Homan edged out Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg 6-5. The nail-biting match came down to the wire, with Homan making a game-winning inturn tap for two points in the eighth end.
Homan’s clutch play was set up by Hasselborg’s final stone overcurled, leaving the door open for the Canadian skip. With the win, Homan’s top-ranked team extended their winning streak to 23 games and improved their season record to an impressive 40-2.
This victory marks Homan’s second straight Grand Slam title, with her team running the table at the Kioti National. The Ottawa-based rink, consisting of Homan, third Tracy Fleury, second Emma Miskew, and lead Sarah Wilkes, has been nearly unbeatable this season.
Meanwhile, the men’s final was set to feature Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, against top-ranked Bruce Mouat of Scotland. The match was scheduled to take place later in the day at the Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The Kioti National is the third of five events on the Grand Slam circuit, which features the best curling teams from around the world. With Homan’s win, the Canadian team solidifies their position as one of the top-ranked rinks in the world.
