The New York Yankees are exploring options to fill the hole at first base after declining Anthony Rizzo’s 2025 club option. One potential solution is Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Díaz.
Díaz’s 2024 performance was a slight step back from his 2023 season, where he won a Silver Slugger Award. However, he would still be a significant upgrade for the Yankees. He slashed .281/.341/.414 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI in 621 plate appearances for the Rays.
The Yankees’ first base was underwhelming in 2024, with five players combining for -1.1 WAR. Only three other teams performed worse.
To acquire Díaz, the Yankees might need to offer two prospects, such as speedy center fielder Brando Mayea and righty Zach Messinger.
Landing Díaz would provide the Yankees with an affordable multi-year solution for first base. He’s entering the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $24 million deal in 2025. Díaz will earn $10 million next season, and there’s a $12 million club option for 2026.
