Texas’ Red Zone Conundrum: Can Arch Manning be the Solution?
The Texas Longhorns have been struggling with red zone efficiency, and quarterback Quinn Ewers’ performance has been a significant contributing factor. Despite improving from last season’s dismal 3.93 points per red zone possession to 4.42 this year, Texas still ranks a mediocre 67th nationally and 37th in the Power Four.
A closer examination of the Longhorns’ offense reveals a troubling trend. Over their last six games, Texas has averaged a mere 3.65 points per red zone trip, a significant drop from their first seven games. This decline is alarming, especially considering the company they’ll be keeping in the playoffs.
So, what’s behind this slump? While there’s no straightforward answer, many of the issues center around Ewers. His health has been a concern, having missed two games due to an oblique injury. The severity of the strain is unknown, but it’s possible that Ewers hasn’t fully healed and is playing through the pain.
The red zone is an area where quarterbacks often need to put extra velocity on their throws, which could be exacerbating Ewers’ injury. Since his return, many of his red zone throws have been short, screens, or rainbow fades to the end zone, relying on his receivers to make plays. Unfortunately, Texas hasn’t been able to capitalize on these opportunities consistently.
In comparison to the 12 quarterbacks leading teams in the College Football Playoff, Ewers’ performance has been underwhelming. His completion percentage, passing yards, and touchdowns all rank near the bottom of the group.
This is where Arch Manning comes in. As a highly touted recruit, Manning brings a fresh set of skills and a clean bill of health. While it’s uncertain whether he’ll be able to address Texas’ red zone woes immediately, he offers a promising alternative to Ewers.
To make a deep run in the playoffs, Texas needs to find a solution to their red zone struggles. With Manning waiting in the wings, the Longhorns may have an obvious answer. Will they make the switch, or will they stick with Ewers? Only time will tell.
