MLB Analyst Makes Surprising Pick for Mets Lineup
The New York Mets are on the hunt for a primary first baseman, and while Pete Alonso is a familiar face, MLB analyst Jeff Joyce believes Alex Bregman would be a better fit. With the Mets offering Alonso a three-year, $90 million contract, Joyce suggests that Bregman’s versatility and base-reaching abilities would bring more balance to the lineup.
Bregman, a two-time All-Star, boasts a career .272 batting average and has been part of two title-winning seasons with the Houston Astros. Joyce envisions Bregman slotting in at first base, with Mark Vientos shifting to the other corner. This lineup would feature Francisco Lindor at leadoff, followed by Juan Soto, Bregman, Brandon Nimmo, and Vientos.
“I’d rather have Bregman at third, Vientos at first, if I’m the Mets, versus Alonso,” Joyce said. “Yeah. Now look, Alonso is your guy. The fans love him. Bregman was a part of those Astros teams, so that there’s that to deal with. But I think there’s more versatility with Bregman there in the lineup where he could give you some good at-bats.”
Joyce highlights Bregman’s ability to hit in front of or behind Soto, providing more flexibility in the lineup. While Alonso brings power, Bregman’s consistent hitting and ability to perform in big spots make him an attractive option.
However, the Mets will face stiff competition for Bregman’s services. At least four teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and San Francisco Giants, are reportedly interested in signing the Gold Glove-winning third baseman.
As the offseason heats up, the Mets will need to make a compelling offer to secure Bregman’s signature. With Steve Cohen’s deep pockets, the Mets have the resources to make a significant bid. But will it be enough to land Bregman and create a championship-caliber team? Only time will tell.
