.Alabama Football: Justin Jefferson’s Potential Return Bolsters Defense
In a significant development for Alabama football, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack expressed optimism about senior linebacker Justin Jefferson returning for the 2025 season. Wommack’s comments came ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan, where Jefferson is set to start his second consecutive game at middle linebacker.
Jefferson, who began his collegiate career at Pearl River Community College, qualifies for a fifth season of eligibility due to the NCAA’s recent blanket eligibility waiver. This waiver grants an additional year of eligibility to student-athletes who previously competed at a non-NCAA school or junior college.
Wommack’s optimism about Jefferson’s return is significant, given the linebacker’s clutch performances this season. Jefferson has recorded 51 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks, mostly as a key reserve. His experience and leadership would be invaluable to the Alabama defense, particularly with junior linebackers Jihaad Campbell and Deontae Lawson potentially leaving for the NFL.
“I think it goes without saying how special that would be for our defense,” Wommack said. “You know, when you have Jihaad Campbell, Deontae Lawson, and Justin Jefferson potentially all walking out the door, and now you’ve got a chance to recoup at least one of those players.”
Head coach Kalen DeBoer also praised Jefferson’s unique play style, experience, and leadership ability. DeBoer acknowledged that Jefferson’s style differs from Lawson’s but emphasized his trustworthiness and team-first mindset.
“Maybe a little different style,” DeBoer said. “Obviously, stature. You look at that right away, but Justin can run. Justin’s physical. He’s a guy you can count on. He’s really trustworthy. He pours everything into it.”
As Alabama prepares to face Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl, the potential return of Justin Jefferson for the 2025 season provides a significant boost to the team’s defense.
