Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Mykel Patterson-McDonald has entered the transfer portal, according to Collin Kennedy of 247 Sports. This decision comes after a freshman season where Patterson-McDonald did not see any playing time on defense or special teams.
Patterson-McDonald, a native of Moore, Oklahoma, was a highly touted recruit. He played both ways at Westmoore High School, starring at defensive back and contributing at wide receiver and running back. His senior year statistics included 62 solo tackles, 14 pass deflections, and one interception.
Ranked as a 4-star prospect by Rivals and a 3-star by ESPN, On3, and 247 Sports, Patterson-McDonald chose Oklahoma over offers from Houston, Missouri, Iowa State, and others. His father, Larry McDonald, was also a walk-on football player at OU.
Patterson-McDonald’s departure is the latest in a series of Sooners defensive backs to enter the transfer portal. He joins Jayden Rowe, Kani Walker, Erik McCarty, and Makari Vickers. Additionally, four other OU defensive players have entered the portal: linebackers Dasan McCullough, Phil Picciotti, and Lewis Carter, and defensive lineman Ashton Sanders.
On the recruiting front, Oklahoma signed five defensive backs in the Class of 2025: Trystan Haynes, Courtland Guillory, Omarion Robinson, Marcus Wimberly, and Maliek Hawkins. Haynes and Guillory are rated as 4-star prospects, while the others are 3-stars.
The winter transfer portal window closed on December 28, but OU players had extra time to enter due to the team’s bowl game on December 27. The next portal window will open on April 16 and close on April 25.
