A contract standoff between the Parramatta Eels and Dylan Brown has taken a dramatic turn, with the Newcastle Knights emerging as a serious suitor for the talented five-eighth. According to Fox Sports Australia, Brown’s current contract for 2025 is worth around $750,000, with a significant increase to over $1 million per season from 2026 onwards until the end of 2031.
However, the Eels have refused Brown’s agent’s request to bump up the deal in order to remove the round 10 get out clause, which has sparked interest from the Knights. Rugby league legend, Alexander, has weighed in on the situation, stating that the Eels’ refusal to up Brown’s contract could ultimately cost them the player.
“It’s shattering for the Eels on the eve of the season… I can see the situation that they’re in. They don’t want to be bending over and they want to show strength. But it might cost them Dylan Brown too,” Alexander said.
The Knights have reportedly crunched the numbers and are prepared to table Brown a monster deal worth over $6 million plus in total, but only if he is serious about leaving Parramatta. Alexander believes that the Eels’ decision to allow the clauses to be put in the contract in the first place has ultimately led to the current standoff.
