The Tampa Bay Rays have signed former Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Thad Ward and catcher Brady Lindsly, formerly of the Washington Nationals, to minor league deals. Both players will add depth to the Rays’ system as they look to build a strong roster for the 2025 season.
Thad Ward, a right-handed pitcher, was a fifth-round pick by the Red Sox in the 2018 MLB Draft. He showed promise early in his career, excelling in the minors with a strong mix of pitches, particularly his sinker and slider. However, injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2021, slowed his progress. He was later selected by the Nationals in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft but struggled in his limited MLB action, posting a 6.37 ERA in 35.1 innings in 2023. Now, with the Rays, he will have an opportunity to refine his skills and potentially earn a spot in the major league bullpen.
Catcher Brady Lindsly, a sixth-round pick by the Nationals in 2020, is known for his defensive skills and game-calling ability. While he has not yet appeared in the majors, he has worked his way through the minor league ranks, displaying solid leadership behind the plate. Offensively, Lindsly has been serviceable but has yet to develop consistent power. The Rays, who have a reputation for developing under-the-radar talent, may see potential in his defensive capabilities as a depth option at catcher.
Both signings align with Tampa Bay’s strategy of finding overlooked talent and maximizing their potential. While neither Ward nor Lindsly is guaranteed an MLB spot, they provide valuable organizational depth and could contribute if given the opportunity.
