In a notable move within the Southeastern Conference (SEC), former Tennessee linebacker Jalen Smith has committed to Mississippi State. Smith, who entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier in December 2024, announced his decision on December 19, 2024.
During the 2024 season, Smith, a redshirt freshman, appeared in all 12 regular-season games for the Volunteers. He recorded 34 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, ranking eighth on the team in total tackles. His standout performance came against Kentucky, where he notched a career-high nine tackles over 34 snaps, earning the highest Pro Football Focus grade (78.3) among Tennessee linebackers in that game.
Smith’s journey to the SEC began at Grayson High School in Georgia, where he distinguished himself as a formidable defensive presence. As a senior in 2022, he amassed 154 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. His high school success led to his recruitment as a three-star prospect, and he joined Tennessee as part of the 2023 class.
Despite his contributions to Tennessee’s defense, Smith sought a new opportunity, leading to his transfer to Mississippi State. He will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Bulldogs. Mississippi State, under new head coach Jeff Lebby, is looking to rebound from a challenging 2-10 season in 2024, where they went winless in SEC play. Smith’s addition is anticipated to bolster the Bulldogs’ defense as they aim for a turnaround in the upcoming season.
Interestingly, the 2025 season will see Smith face his former team, as Tennessee is scheduled to play Mississippi State in Starkville on September 27, 2025. This matchup adds an intriguing narrative to Smith’s transfer, as he will compete against his former teammates in a pivotal SEC clash.
