The University of South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team commenced the Paul Mainieri era with a decisive victory over Sacred Heart, marking a promising start to the 2025 season. Mainieri, appointed as the 31st head coach on June 11, 2024, brings a wealth of experience, including a national championship with LSU in 2009 and six College World Series appearances.
The season opener, held at Founders Park in Columbia, saw senior right-hander Dylan Eskew take the mound. Eskew, who recorded a 4.60 ERA over 19 appearances in the previous season, delivered a strong performance, setting the tone for the Gamecocks’ defense.
Offensively, junior Ethan Petry led the charge. Petry, known for his impressive .306 batting average and 21 home runs last season, continued to demonstrate his prowess at the plate, contributing significantly to the team’s run tally.
The coaching staff, assembled by Mainieri, played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Associate head coach and hitting coach Monte Lee, retained from the previous staff, worked closely with the batters to refine their techniques. Pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Terry Rooney, who previously collaborated with Mainieri at LSU, focused on enhancing the pitchers’ performance.
