FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS: David Boren, a towering figure in Oklahoma’s history, passed away on Thursday at the age of 83. His remarkable life was marked by numerous achievements, including serving as Oklahoma’s governor, United States senator, and president of the University of Oklahoma (OU)
Boren’s journey in public service began when he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1967. He went on to become the state’s governor in 1975, at just 33 years old, making him the youngest governor in the nation at the time ¹. His tenure as governor was followed by a 15-year stint in the U.S. Senate, where he played a key role in shaping the country’s intelligence policies as the longest-serving chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
In 1994, Boren took the reins as the president of OU, a position he held for 24 years. During his tenure, he oversaw significant upgrades to the university’s infrastructure, including the renovation of Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and the addition of Heisman Park. He also made strategic hires, including athletic director Joe Castiglione, softball coach Patty Gasso, and former football coach Bob Stoops ².
Boren’s legacy extends beyond his impressive resume. He was a champion of education and a strong advocate for the University of Oklahoma. His commitment to the institution was evident in his ability to increase the donor base from 18,000 to over 100,000 friends and alumni during his presidency ².
Despite his many accomplishments, Boren’s later years were marred by controversy. He was accused of sexual harassment during his time as president, allegations he vehemently denied. Although no charges were filed, the controversy led to his separation from the university in 2019 ²
