South Carolina Wins Coin Flip, Earns Top Seed in SEC Tournament
In a dramatic turn of events, the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team has secured the number one seed in the 2025 SEC Tournament after winning a coin flip against the Texas Longhorns. The coin flip, conducted by SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, saw the Gamecocks emerge victorious, earning them the top spot in the conference tournament.
The Gamecocks finished the regular season with an impressive 26-3 overall record and a 15-1 conference record, tying with the Longhorns for the top spot in the SEC standings. With the two teams unable to be separated on the court, the coin flip was used as a tiebreaker to determine the number one seed.
Coach Dawn Staley expressed her excitement at the outcome of the coin flip, saying, “It was kind of exciting. The build-up was good. The Gamecocks finished their regular season with a hard-fought 78-66 win over No. 14 Kentucky, capping off an impressive regular season campaign. They have now won four consecutive regular-season conference titles under Staley’s leadership and five in the past six years.
The 2025 SEC Tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, with the Gamecocks facing the winner of the game between No. 9 Tennessee and No. 16 Texas A&M on Friday. South Carolina has already beaten both teams once this season and will be looking to continue their dominance in the conference tournament.
