USC Trojans’ sophomore sensation JuJu Watkins recently expressed her heartfelt appreciation for WNBA star Caitlin Clark’s supportive gesture. At the John R. Wooden Awards in April 2024, Clark, then a standout at the University of Iowa, extended her phone number to Watkins, offering guidance as she navigates her burgeoning basketball career. Reflecting on this act, Watkins remarked, “She made herself available and was like, ‘whatever you need.’ I was grateful for her kindness.”
Watkins, who has been following Clark’s journey, admires her both on and off the court. “Caitlin is a great player, but she’s also a really good person,” Watkins noted. Despite having Clark’s contact information, Watkins has yet to reach out, acknowledging Clark’s transition to the WNBA and not wanting to impose. “I’m sure she’s adjusting to the [WNBA], so I don’t want to bother her too much. But yeah, if I ever do really need to, I’ll make sure I reach out,” she added.
The mutual respect between these two athletes is evident. Clark, recognizing the spotlight shifting to Watkins, told her, “I had this attention for a year and a half, two years. So to be able to share that honor with her and be a part of the State Farm family, it means a lot for me,” Watkins shared.
Off the court, Watkins is expanding her influence by starring in and executive producing the original documentary series “On the Rise: JuJu Watkins” on Peacock. The series offers an intimate look into her life, showcasing her journey and the dynamics of women’s basketball. “It’s just a glimpse into my life, which is something that a lot of people don’t really get to see,” Watkins said.
