Truck Driver Saves Woman from Car Accident on Cleveland Highway
CLEVELAND – A heroic truck driver came to the rescue of a woman trapped in her vehicle after a serious accident on a Cleveland highway.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening on Interstate 90 when a sedan lost control, collided with a guardrail, and came to rest in a dangerous position in the middle of the roadway. Witnesses say the driver, a woman in her late 30s, appeared disoriented and unable to exit her damaged vehicle as oncoming traffic swerved to avoid a collision.
That’s when John Matthews, a long-haul truck driver passing through Cleveland, sprang into action. Matthews, who was driving behind the accident, immediately stopped his semi-truck, using it as a barrier to shield the woman’s car from traffic. He then rushed to the vehicle, assessed the situation, and helped the driver, who was shaken but conscious, out of the wreckage.
“I just did what I hope someone would do for my family,” Matthews said. “The car was in a really bad spot, and I knew I had to act fast.”
Emergency responders arrived within minutes, and paramedics evaluated the woman, who suffered minor injuries but was expected to recover fully. Authorities praised Matthews for his quick thinking, stating that his actions likely prevented a more serious tragedy.
“He put himself in harm’s way to save a stranger,” said Officer Daniel Carter of the Cleveland Police Department. “That’s true bravery.”
Matthews, a truck driver for over 20 years, downplayed his heroism, saying, “I was just in the right place at the right time.”
