With Aidan Hutchinson expected to return at full strength, Detroit has a strong cornerstone, but they need more impact players to sustain pressure across four quarters. There are several standout EDGE rushers still available or recently drafted who could help elevate the Lions’ defense to the next level.
One top target is James Pearce Jr. out of Tennessee. Known for his explosive first step and positional versatility, Pearce has been a disruptive force in the SEC, recording 17.5 sacks and 28 tackles for loss over the past two seasons. His ability to consistently pressure the quarterback would make him a valuable asset in Detroit’s rotation.
Mike Green from Marshall is another dynamic option. Named the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Green notched 17 sacks and 23 tackles for loss last season. His non-stop motor and standout performance at the Senior Bowl have elevated his draft stock, showing he can perform against tougher competition.
Donovan Ezeiruaku of Boston College brings exceptional production and technique to the table. With 16.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss in 2024, he earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. His impressive bend and refined pass-rush skills make him a potential star at the next level.
Ohio State’s Jack Sawyer, who helped lead the Buckeyes to a National Championship, is another high-upside defender. Sawyer’s combination of physicality, leadership, and versatility in stopping the run and batting down passes makes him a strong schematic fit for the Lions’ system.
Beyond these Pro Bowl-level talents, there are also several promising EDGE prospects who could contribute early and develop into future stars. One is Josaiah Stewart from Michigan, who racked up 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss in 2024. Graded at 92.3 by Pro Football Focus, Stewart’s speed and coverage ability could give the Lions flexibility on defense.
Nic Scourton, now at Texas A&M after a dominant season at Purdue, led the Big Ten in sacks and has an advanced pass-rush skillset for a 20-year-old. He brings long-term upside and could develop into a core contributor with the right coaching.
JT Tuimoloau, another Ohio State standout, offers scheme versatility with his ability to line up inside or outside. His blend of size, strength, and agility gives defensive coordinators options for creative alignments.
Finally, Ahmed Hassanein from Boise State, a sixth-round pick in 2025, brings high production and a relentless drive. With 22 sacks and over 30 tackles for loss across his final two college seasons, Hassanein could surprise many as a valuable rotational piece with developmental upside.
By exploring these additions, the Lions have the chance to build one of the league’s deepest and most dangerous pass-rushing units heading into camp.
