Former Kentucky edge rusher JJ Weaver has officially taken the next step in his football journey, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Weaver becomes the latest Wildcat to earn an NFL opportunity, underscoring the University of Kentucky’s growing reputation for developing pro-ready talent.
Weaver is one of six Kentucky players to sign as undrafted free agents following the 2025 NFL Draft. He joins a talented group that includes defensive back Zion Childress (Dallas Cowboys), linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson (Green Bay Packers), offensive tackle Marques Cox (Denver Broncos), center Eli Cox (Houston Texans), and defensive tackle Tre’vonn Rybka (Miami Dolphins). Additionally, running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye received a training camp invitation from the Baltimore Ravens, giving him a chance to prove himself at the next level.
The 2025 NFL Draft also saw two Kentucky standouts selected:
cornerback Maxwell Hairston was taken in the first round by the Buffalo Bills, while nose tackle Deone Walker went in the fourth round, also to Buffalo. This continues a strong trend for the Wildcats, marking the seventh consecutive year that Kentucky has had multiple players selected in the draft. Over that span—dating back to 2019—a total of 26 Wildcats have heard their names called or signed with NFL teams, a testament to the program’s consistent talent production.
Weaver, a Louisville native, leaves behind a rich legacy at Kentucky. He served as a team captain for three straight seasons, joining elite company with Joshua Paschal and DeAndre Square as the only players in school history to hold that honor for three years. His leadership off the field matched his productivity on it. Weaver graduated in December 2023 with a degree in community leadership and development and is currently pursuing a second degree in family science with a minor in communication.
On the field in 2024, Weaver showcased his disruptive presence, playing in 10 games and recording 32 tackles. He led the team in sacks (5.0) and quarterback hurries (6), while also contributing 5.0 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup. His collegiate career ended with him ranking third in school history in tackles for loss (38.5) and fourth in sacks, marking him as one of the most impactful defenders to wear the blue and white.
With his signing, Weaver brings his leadership, grit, and pass-rushing prowess to Los Angeles, aiming to carve out a role on the Chargers’ defense. His journey from Louisville to Lexington to the NFL is a reflection of his resilience and relentless work ethic—a story that continues to inspire.
