Garrett McMillan, a name familiar to Alabama baseball fans, has taken another major step in his professional career. The former Crimson Tide standout has officially been promoted to the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. This move marks McMillan’s transition from the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the organization’s High-A team, following an impressive early-season performance.
During his time with the Grasshoppers, McMillan posted a stellar 3-0 record over six starts, totaling 29 innings pitched. His stats are nothing short of eye-catching—he allowed just five earned runs, surrendered only 20 hits and three walks, while striking out 29 batters. That translates to a sparkling 1.55 ERA and an extraordinary 0.79 WHIP, all while limiting opposing hitters to a .196 batting average.
McMillan’s journey to professional baseball is one built on persistence and growth. He began his collegiate career at Shelton State Community College, where he developed into a dominant force before transferring to the University of Alabama. Despite missing six weeks due to injury during the 2023 season, he made a significant impact during his two years in Tuscaloosa.

McMillan was drafted twice—first by the Minnesota Twins in the 19th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, and again in the 14th round of the 2023 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who ultimately signed him. Now, just a year into his pro career with the Pirates’ system, he’s making waves and moving up the ranks quickly.
