In a powerful demonstration of compassion and community leadership, Phoenix Suns superstars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker have announced a joint $20 million investment to transform a historic property into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth. The facility, set to open later this year in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, will serve as a safe haven for some of the city’s most vulnerable populations offering not just shelter, but hope, opportunity, and a chance at a better life.
The initiative, titled “HomeCourt Hope,” aims to provide housing, mental health support, educational resources, and career readiness programs for homeless youth and young adults aged 16–25. With homelessness rates on the rise, particularly among young people aging out of foster care or escaping abusive homes, this bold step by Durant and Booker addresses an urgent need in the Phoenix area.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Devin Booker expressed his heartfelt motivation for the project. “People are passing through a lot out there,” Booker said. “Widows, orphans, homeless people every day we see people struggling just to survive. We want to impact people’s lives in our own little way, to be a part of something bigger than basketball.”
Kevin Durant echoed that sentiment, adding, “We’re blessed to be in the position we are in. But with that blessing comes a responsibility. We don’t just play for the Suns, we represent this community, and we care deeply about the people in it.
The facility, which was once a large, vacant mansion in downtown Phoenix, will be fully renovated into a modern shelter with over 30 individual living spaces, community rooms, classrooms, and therapeutic counseling areas. The project will also include partnerships with local nonprofits, faith organizations, and schools to provide wraparound services that help break the cycle of homelessness.
In addition to funding the shelter, Durant and Booker have committed to ongoing involvement in the center’s development, including mentoring, fundraising, and advocacy work. “This isn’t just a one-time check,” Durant explained. “This is a long-term commitment to changing lives.
Community leaders, city officials, and nonprofit organizers have all lauded the players’ efforts. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego praised the athletes during the announcement: “This is the kind of leadership that changes cities.
