In an inspiring act of generosity and leadership, Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has officially announced a $9.7 million personal investment aimed at transforming vacant and underutilized properties into shelters for homeless youth. This landmark initiative, which will be implemented across the greater Houston area, seeks to provide not just safe housing, but also access to essential services such as education, healthcare, mental health support, and job training for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
Altuve, a long-time fan favorite and community advocate, unveiled the project during a press conference Tuesday morning alongside local officials, nonprofit leaders, and youth advocates. Titled Home Plate for Hope, the initiative will see the renovation of over 30 abandoned or neglected homes and apartment complexes into fully furnished transitional housing units for homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24.
“Houston has given me everything,” Altuve said during his announcement. “This city welcomed me, supported me through highs and lows, and now it’s time for me to give back in a meaningful way. No child or teenager should be sleeping on the streets or wondering where their next meal is coming from. With this investment, I want to help create a future where every young person feels safe, supported, and hopeful.”
Altuve’s initiative is being launched in partnership with several established organizations, including Covenant House Texas, the Houston Housing Authority, and several local youth outreach programs. These organizations will help provide case management, therapy, educational pathways, and career development opportunities to residents of the new shelters.
City leaders, including Houston Mayor John Whitmire, praised Altuve’s efforts as “visionary and deeply needed,” citing recent data indicating that Houston has seen a troubling rise in youth homelessness over the past few years. “This isn’t just charity; it’s smart, sustainable community building,” said Mayor Whitmire. “Jose Altuve is showing what it means to be a true leader both on and off the field.”
Construction on the first set of shelters is expected to begin in early summer 2025, with the first homes ready for occupancy by year’s end. Each location will be staffed 24/7 with trained professionals and will offer a warm, welcoming environment designed to nurture healing and growth.
This move marks one of the largest individual contributions from a professional athlete to directly address homelessness in recent history, and it sets a precedent for other public figures to use their influence and resources for tangible, long-term impact.
