4-Star Defensive Back Chooses Clemson Over Florida, South Carolina
Clemson football has added another major piece to its 2025 recruiting class with the commitment of 4-star defensive back Malik Thompson, who chose the Tigers over fellow finalists Florida and South Carolina.
Thompson, a standout at Warner Robins High School in Georgia, made his announcement via social media, citing Clemson’s coaching staff, development track record, and family atmosphere as key factors in his decision. At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Thompson is known for his physical play, ball-hawking instincts, and versatility in the secondary. He is ranked among the top 25 cornerbacks nationally by most major recruiting services and is considered a top-200 overall prospect.
“Coach Swinney and Coach Conn really made me feel like a priority from day one,” Thompson said in an interview following his commitment. “They showed a consistent level of interest and kept it real with me throughout the process. Clemson’s tradition of producing elite defensive backs speaks for itself.”
The Tigers’ ability to develop NFL-caliber talent on defense played a major role in Thompson’s decision. Clemson has consistently sent defensive backs to the league, including recent names like A.J. Terrell and Andrew Booth Jr., something that stood out to Thompson and his family. He took official visits to all three of his finalists this spring but said his time in Death Valley stood out above the rest.
Florida and South Carolina were both seen as strong contenders in the final stretch, particularly due to their proximity and heavy recruiting efforts. The Gators pitched early playing time and SEC exposure, while the Gamecocks emphasized a chance to be a foundational piece in their defensive rebuild. Still, Clemson’s consistency and culture ultimately tipped the scale.
With Thompson’s pledge, Clemson continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail. He becomes the fifth 4-star commitment in their 2025 class and joins a defensive haul that’s quickly shaping into one of the ACC’s best. His commitment could also help sway other top prospects still considering Clemson.
