Mark Ingram II, the University of Alabama’s first Heisman Trophy winner and one of the key cornerstones of Nick Saban’s early dynasty, is officially returning to Tuscaloosa. The former star running back, who helped usher in a new era of dominance for Alabama football, has joined the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff in a player development and mentoring role, bringing with him a wealth of experience, leadership, and championship pedigree.
Ingram’s return to Alabama marks a homecoming more than a decade in the making. As a sophomore in 2009, he became the first player in school history to win the Heisman Trophy, rushing for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns while leading the Tide to a perfect season and their first national title under Nick Saban. His performance not only solidified his place in Alabama lore but also signaled the start of a dynasty that would go on to define college football for over a decade.
Now, Ingram brings that same energy, insight, and championship mentality back to the program, this time in a support role aimed at guiding and developing current players both on and off the field. His official title is “Special Assistant to the Head Coach for Player Development,” a position that will see him focus on mentoring student-athletes, assisting with off-the-field growth, and helping players adjust to the demands of college football at the highest level.
“I’m incredibly honored to be back in Tuscaloosa and part of this great program again,” Ingram said in a statement released by the university. “Alabama gave me everything—an education, lifelong friendships, and the platform to live my dream in the NFL. I want to give back to the next generation of players and help them succeed just like I was helped.”
Head Coach Kalen DeBoer, entering his first season at the helm after taking over from Nick Saban, praised the hire and emphasized Ingram’s unique value to the program.
“Mark understands what it means to be an Alabama player. He’s lived it. He’s won championships here, and he’s gone on to have great success at the next level,” DeBoer said. “He brings authenticity, passion, and a deep connection to the Alabama standard. Our players will benefit tremendously from his mentorship.”
Ingram spent over a decade in the NFL, playing for the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, and Houston Texans, earning three Pro Bowl selections along the way. Known for his toughness, work ethic, and leadership, he was a respected voice in every locker room he entered. Those same traits now make him a valuable asset on the sideline and in the meeting rooms at Alabama.
Beyond football, Ingram has also been active in philanthropy and media. He recently worked as a studio analyst for FOX Sports, demonstrating sharp football acumen and communication skills—qualities that will serve him well in his new coaching role.
