She has been producing hits for almost three decades – but some of her loyal fans are only just learning the meaning behind her stage name.
Pink, whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore-Hart, started her music career at aged 15 when she created the short-lied girl group Choice.
She received double platinum certification by Recording Industry Association of America with her first solo album, Can’t Take Me Home, in 2000. Since then, she has won three Grammy Awards, a Daytime Emmy Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, seven MTV VMA, two MTV EMA and two Brit Awards.
Some of her most popular songs include Just Give Me a Reason, So What, Try, Lady Marmalade, True Love, Raise Your Glass, Cover Me In Sunshine, Just Like Fire and What About Us. But despite her worldwide success, some fans still have no idea why she’s called Pink, stylised P!nk.
While most people assumed she simply likes the colour pink, it turns out her stage name actually has an X-rated meaning. A statement on Life and Style, which has since been shared on IMDb, reads: “I thought Pink got her name from her infamous hair colour. Anyone else? No?
“Ok. Turns out, Alecia Beth Moore didn’t get her inspo from a bottle of L’Oréal. Instead, the What About Us songstress came up with the moniker while watching Reservoir Dogs — and the meaning is actually raunchy Af. She explained: “My best friend had never seen a white girl’s vagina before so he asked me if I could see it, so I showed it to him and he said ‘It’s pink!’ Then my friends started calling me Mr. Pink.
“If you’ve never seen Quentin Tarantino’s violent film, Steve Buscemi’s character is also named ‘Mr. Pink’.”
She admitted, however, that people aren’t exactly thrilled with the how she came up with her stage name. “I’ve been receiving complaints for a very long time. I’m Ok with it,” she said.
Commenting on this, one gobsmacked Reddit user said: “And I thought all along it was her pink hair.” Another user said: “Isn’t it because she used to blush easily as a child?” A third user said: “She told Radio Disney it was because of her blushing. That was the family safe explanation. She also said it’s a vagina reference.” Another user said: “I think she made that stuff up so she can call herself Pink.”
